Steel Characteristics

Leatherman tools are made from 100% stainless steel to provide years of dependable service. Each 400-series stainless implement is heat treated to optimal hardness for its function. For example, our knives and files are typically tempered to Rockwell C 57 to achieve excellent edge retention. Our plier jaws and most screwdrivers have a Rockwell C hardness of 49-53 for better durability.

Quality Standards

How is Leatherman better quality than the rest? Look at the sharp corners on our screwdrivers, built to ANSI specifications for strength and dimensions (which we verify with a laser micrometer). We regularly torture test our plier jaws; they are finished and riveted so precisely you can cut paper with the wire cutters. Even non-functional cosmetic flaws no bigger than a speck of pepper are not acceptable in any of the numerous inspections each tool must pass
